Should Your Kitchen Match Your Whole House?

Should your kitchen match the rest of the house, or should it have its own style? Should it at least match the dining room or living room? How do you keep everything coordinated while still having individuality?

In all honesty, a kitchen should only match the rest of your home if you want it to. If you're looking for a smooth, cohesive transitional style or a whole-home color scheme,  this is a great idea.

But in many cases, having a stand-out style is better. If you hate monotony, we suggest not matching your kitchen to any other room. Even when you're selling and the whole house is cohesive, you can use those as secondary or accent colors, but the kitchen should stand out since it's usually the most significant home-selling feature.

What Rooms Should Your Kitchen Match?

A kitchen should match only two other rooms—the living room and the dining room—instead of a whole home. Any other pairing would be ridiculous unless you went all out.

Dining Room

If your kitchen and dining room are in different rooms, using the same colors helps to connect them. If your dining room is down a hall, it may be helpful to use that color as an accent color in the halls to create a steady flow between the spaces.

Living Room (In Open Concept Design)

If you have an open-concept design, matching the color palettes of the kitchen and living room can make the space look even larger. However, if you're trying to create separate spaces with different moods, using the same colors wouldn't be recommended.

Should All Cabinets Match Throughout The House?

Matching cabinets create a neat look and a similar visual element for eyes to follow throughout the house. But it really isn't necessary. It's more important to have matching cabinets within the same room unless you're going for the two-tone look.

What Should Match WITHIN A Kitchen?

Now, when it comes to the things within your kitchen, you need to create a matching style for a better flow, even (and especially) if your kitchen has its own style. For instance, your appliances should all match.

You should also coordinate your countertops, backsplash, and cabinets. They don't have to match, but they should be similar colors to create a cohesive space.
